During Operation Protective Edge, he was part of the K9 unit, working with dogs who would sniff out and neutralize terrorists. Just before entering a building, there was an explosion inside the building which triggered another and a 3 story wall began to collapse. He threw himself on top of the dog to protect him from the crushing building falling down on them. The crushing wall broke his teeth, dislocated and relocated his shoulder several times in a row and other broken bones and injuries. Soldiers that were part of his team dug him and the dog out, Ben asking they save the dog first. They were being carried back to the rescue vehicle where they were shot at and a terror tunnel bomb exploded nearby as well. Having been diagnosed with PTSD, he has turned that into a positive and now leads a program using service animals to help treat PTSD in others. Although he helps others, this program is one of the first time's he has publicly acknowledged his own suffering.
