I deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 to early 2006, where I worked as a part of a team to collect information from local Afghans. While deployed I was in a Humvee rollover accident where I was thrown from my position in the gun and knocked unconscious. Upon waking, through the pain I continued on with the mission and opted out of a medical evacuation. With the help of the doctor, I kept the pain medicated enough to complete the tour and head home. I decided I wasn't ready to finish my time in the military, and deployed again in 2009 back to Afghanistan. Over the course of the year we did several vehicle-mounted and unmounted patrols, which only aggravated any issues further, forcing me to leave the military upon return to the US. I suffered a lot when home, both with physical and mental pain. It took years to come to a place of acceptance, but I tell any veteran that will listen how I've done it and how I stopped looking at all of the negatives and focus on the positives in life.
